Four planes. Three thousand victims. Two towers. One morning. September 11th 2001 the day that changed America forever.

Imagine waking up and getting ready for yet another day of work. You put on your best outfit, grab a cup of coffee and swing by the local bakery for a last minute breakfast. When you finally arrive at work, you settle into your desk and prepare for the day ahead. Then, barely an hour into your shift, the unthinkable happens your office goes up in flames.

This was reality for the people who died on that fateful Tuesday morning. Some were in the towers, others in the Pentagon and the rest thirty thousand feet in the sky and digging through the smoldering rubble below. America watched in horror as the world was engulfed in flames. Our country crumbled to the ground. But from the ashes rose a new nation, one united in grief, despair and a longing for justice.

"In the Blink of an Eye September 11th Stories" immortalizes that day in vivid detail. The short story "And Then He Smiled," tell the heart wrenching tale of a mother's grief over losing her child with a supernatural twist and the poem "One Dark September Morning," champions hope even in the darkest of times. Filled with moments of joy and despair, of faith and disbelief, of life and death, Brittany Tenpenny's "In the Blink of an Eye September 11th Stories," is a literary anthology destined to touch the heart and inspire the soul.

For the first month of the book's release (Sept 1-Sept 30), all proceeds will be donated to the National September 11th Memorial and Museum in New York City.

Although I don't usually download shorter pieces, I saw that some of the proceeds were going to charity and decided to give this one a shot.

The book starts with a brief, well-written introduction reminding the reader of 9/11's significance. This set a serious tone and, for me, brought back personal memories of the tragedy.

A poem, "One Dark September Morning," followed. Both lyrical and structurally simple, the poem balances emotional images from 9/11 with the repeating line, "One dark September morning," a line that doesn't quite fit rhythmically, which causes tension that isn't relieved until the very last line. It was a really cool effect contributing to the eerie atmosphere of the story to follow.

The short story, "And then He Smiled," is told through the voice of a loving mother who has lost her child. At first her ideas travel from one experience to another, her tone a mixture of the contemplative, and the grief-stricken. But much like the poem, her "dark" September promises to one day, be bright.

There is a lot to like about this story, but I'd hate to be accused of long-windedness and should really wrap this one up. How about what I was most impressed with? Here it is: I was most impressed with the author's narrative voice. I found it mature and engaging, smooth and natural. I'm intrigued by Tenpenny's style and looking forward to the release of her first novel.

After reading the book my mind immediately thought back to that horrible and tragic day America was attacked. The author was so vivid in her description that I felt as if I was part of the story, right along side with Mikey's mother. Bravo! Well done!! I'm looking forward to reading more of this Authors works.
very informative, easy to read and understand
This contains ONLY a poem and a short story. That's it! Both are good, but that doesn't make this worth more than a buck.
An interesting reading. I liked in particular the writing style and the prose, and I find that the author feels very comfortable in writing both poetry and prose. Even though sad (and how couldn't it be, considering the subject), the short story is intense and touching, and I read it in just one breath.

I read that the author is working on her first novel. I am really looking forward to reading it.
This book is a poignant reminder of the terrible events of September 11, 2001, and what gives this book its strong impact is the focus on Mikey, the narrator's son whom she lost that day. Though not a long story, it is a painful one. Brittany illustrates the incredible suffering that so many felt that day, and continue to feel even now, by working on the most personal level. The author describes an intense vignette about a particular hard night this mother endures. The picture Brittany paints is very touching and sad, though there also is a glimmer of hope at the end, that somehow, the mother can go on and will one day see her son again. A very well-done story.
“In the Blink of an Eye” consists of a poem and short story that commemorate September 11. The touching poem paints a broad stroke of the tragedy that occurred on that dark September morning. The short story personalizes the tragedy as it gets inside the head of a mother who lost her little boy on the plane coming from Boston.
Spiritual, moving, and poignant, the book is a quick read that delivers quite an emotional experience. This would be a good book for teachers to use to help teach children about September 11. While I would have liked more detail about the mother and son, that may have taken away from the spiritual element and the emotional state of the mother’s.
It’s a satisfying read that makes us stop and think about that day.
