The odyssey of María Eva Duarte de Perón--the Argentine first lady made famous in the play and the movie Evita--was as remarkable in death as it was in life. A few years after she succumbed to cervical cancer, her specially preserved body was taken by the military dictatorship that succeeded her deposed husband Juan. Hidden for sixteen years in Italy in a crypt under a false name, she was eventually exhumed and returned to Buenos Aires to be buried in an underground tomb said to be secure enough to withstand a nuclear attack.

Or was she?

When San Francisco private eye August Riordan engages in a flirtation with a beautiful university student from Buenos Aires, he witnesses her death in a tragic shooting and is drawn into mad hunt for Evita's remains. He needs all of his wits, his network of friends and associates, and an unexpected legacy from the dead father he has never known to help him survive the deadly intrigue between powerful Argentine movers and shakers, ex-military men, and a mysterious woman named Isis who is expert in ancient techniques of mummification.

The fifth novel in the August Riordan series, The Big Wake-Up plunges everyman PI Riordan and his sidekick Chris Duckworth into their most terrifying and anguishing case ever.

Winner of the winner of the 2010 Independent Publisher Book Award (IPPY) in the Mystery/Suspense/Thriller Category.

The Big WakeUp August Riordan Series Book 5 edition by Mark Coggins Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I've really enjoyed each book in this August Riordan series, but this one was almost too violent & had a very strange ending. It does, however, give the author a chance to bring August back after he cleans up his act a little bit and maybe gets a newer car and a regular love interest.

The Big WakeUp August Riordan Series Book 5 edition by Mark Coggins Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Another suspenseful and funny mystery from Mark Coggins. The adventure begins when San Francisco private eye August Riordan witnesses a murderous rampage that couldn't happen in any other city. This event draws him into a search for an important body that is coveted by a collection of mysterious (and at times ruthless) South Americans. Along the way, this private eye had me laughing out loud with one sarcastic remark after another. An entertaining page turner, no question about it.
I've read and enjoyed all of the August Riordan series, and this is the best yet. Mark Coggins captures the texture of classic, hard-boiled PI stories brings them into the 21st century.

All of the August Riordan stories have excellent plotting, pacing, and thrills. Chris Duckworth, Riordan's colorful guide to modern technology, is always good for a few laughs. _The Big Wake-Up_ has all of this in spades _plus_ a high-concept plot worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster.

If you read the novels in order, you can see how Coggins has grown as a writer. But _The Big Wake-Up_, the fifth in the series, takes a big step up. It's the type of novel that should break him out of the mid-list and into best-seller territory. It's the best novel I've read in a long time.
Riordan definitely wears the gummy shoes of his forbears - Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe among them - but he brings unique humor and sex appeal to his portrayal. And like the stories that Hammett and Chandler are famous for, this one has non-stop action. Guns are drawn; fists fly; no one is who they say they are or wants what they claimed to want.
So many of us have been fascinated with Eva Peron since the musical debuted in 30 years ago, and let's just say that this is Evita as you've never seen her before.
Fans of classic noir detective fiction will appreciate the ways in which *The Big Wake-Up* updates the genre, while remaining an original.
"The Big Wake-Up" has more graves, graveyards, gravestones, crypts, mausoleums, coffins, embalming fluid and urns than a vampire-werewolf-Hamlet film festival and it has Eva Peron. Yes, Eva Peron.

"The Big Wake-Up" has August Riordan and that means that perfect pitch of dry humor and an interesting, fully realized assortment of co-workers and associates.

The setting is San Francisco. Riordan is a private detective but he won't be giving master classes at the convention. What he lacks in technology skills and sleuth savvy, he balances with determination and a gut load of zeal. He's easily drawn in by the stunning Melina Rivero, sister of the beautiful Araceli Rivero, whom August meets in a Laundromat doing his wash (always a good indication of the income level of your leading man) in the opening scene. Araceli's demise comes quickly in a heart-pounding scene straight out of "Bullitt."

Riordan isn't quite as world-weary as Marlowe but just as good at flippant repartee as Charles. Mystery fans will recognize his heritage, but that doesn't mean he's not fresh and fun to spend time with.

There's a big, messy (in a good way) cemetery scene at the end and the body of Eva Peron (or is it?) has more adventures than Rin Tin Tin.
Riordan out-maneuvers the cops, finds himself entangled in a web that has its roots in Argentine intrigue (don't want to say more than that) and there is one last cemetery to visit, one last grave to dig. Or two.

"The Big Wake-Up" is a 5-Hour Energy shot, no snoozing allowed.
Another fun, fast paced read by Mark.
This book is so good I can't even give it enough stars. Very complicated plot and wild.
Warning, I read it in one day. It's addictive.
Like other reviewers, I've read all of the August Riordan mysteries and found this to be the best yet. "The Big Wake Up" is a fast-paced, engaging read with all of the plot complexity fans of the series have come to expect. Hard-bitten San Francisco private detective August Riordan is true to form as he attempts to solve a very unusual missing persons case. Coggins is particularly good at using familiar Bay Area neighborhoods and attractions as settings for his stories and he doesn't disappoint with his latest work. Devoted fans and newcomers alike will find themselves waiting anxiously for the next in the series.
I've really enjoyed each book in this August Riordan series, but this one was almost too violent & had a very strange ending. It does, however, give the author a chance to bring August back after he cleans up his act a little bit and maybe gets a newer car and a regular love interest.
